Live Sky for your agent

A little more sky.
In every conversation.

Bring astronomy to Codex, Claude Code, or your favorite MCP-compatible assistant. Find planets, plan a night under the stars, and look up telescope specifications.

Copy. Paste. Look up.

Copy these instructions and paste them into your agent. It can configure Live Sky and check the connection for you.

Read or manually copy the instructions

Works with agents that can configure remote MCP servers. You may need to approve the connection or restart your client.

Personal use and access

This service is for personal, non-commercial use under the website, API and MCP terms. Respect rate limits and Retry-After responses. Use MCP for agent access; do not automate the website calculator. API-key sign-in is being prepared; current endpoints still use anonymous access.

Prefer the terminal?

Run the command for your installed client. No additional server package is needed.

Codex

codex mcp add livesky --url https://api.dapperfinch.com/livesky/mcp

Adds Live Sky to your Codex configuration.

Available tools

Tool Purpose
get_capabilities Read supported functionality and limitations.
search_locations Resolve a coarse place explicitly supplied by the user.
search_free_catalog Search solar-system objects and Messier M1–M110.
search_telescope_catalog Look up telescope specifications by brand/model.
get_object_position Calculate a supported object's position for the selected place and time.
get_objects_above_horizon Find supported objects above an altitude threshold.
find_observing_window Calculate altitude windows within a bounded interval.
get_tonight_sky Calculate local-night darkness, twilight and target windows.
get_ai_observing_summary Request a short AI observing guide, including available dated weather forecasts and source attribution. Preserve its expiry and treat forecasts as uncertain.
open_sky_panel Open an interactive sky panel in compatible MCP clients.

Use an explicitly selected place

  1. Ask which city or observing place to use. Do not infer it from an IP address, remembered profile or unrelated conversation.
  2. Call search_locations with only the place the user supplied. Do not silently add a country or region. Ask the user to choose if multiple candidates are returned.
  3. Pass the chosen candidate's opaque locationRef to astronomy tools with locationScope: requested_destination.
  4. Preserve the returned Geoapify/OpenStreetMap attribution in the user-facing answer. Use the returned IANA timezone for local dates.

Example tool arguments after the user explicitly selects Joshua Tree, California:

search_locations
{"locationQuery":"Joshua Tree, California"}

get_object_position
{"objectId":"solar:jupiter","locationScope":"requested_destination","locationRef":"<reference returned by search_locations>"}

The reference placeholder must be replaced with an actual tool result. References expire after 15 minutes and are not saved profiles. Resolve the place again after expiry. Raw coordinate and street-address inputs are rejected.

Interpret results and errors

Ground answers in returned fields. Horizon visibility is geometric: it does not establish visibility through clouds, buildings, terrain or a specific telescope. Moon phase does not establish a Moon-interference score or target ranking. Do not invent unsupported distances, catalog details or suitability advice.

Missing location context requires a coarse-place question. Tool errors are returned with isError and an error payload; do not present a failed calculation as successful. Rate limits and a daily geocoder quota apply. Honor retry guidance rather than repeatedly issuing the same call.

Tonight uses observer-local noon-to-next-noon semantics. Before local noon the default interval begins on the preceding evening; supply an explicit localDate for a particular evening. Preserve null or unavailable polar crossings instead of inventing sunrise or sunset times.

Your data

The tools are anonymous and read-only. Your saved Live Sky locations, telescopes and other app data are not synced. Astronomy calculations describe sky geometry. An AI observing guide is generated only when explicitly requested and may use dated weather forecasts with linked source attribution. Missing weather remains unknown. The service does not create alerts or assess obstructions at a viewpoint.

Explicit coarse-place queries are sent to Geoapify. Temporary encrypted references carry observing context between requests; they are not persistent user records. Cloudflare handles service traffic and abuse controls. This guide does not promise zero network logging or zero third-party retention. See the Live Sky privacy policy.

Sun safety and support

Never look directly at the Sun or through an unfiltered telescope. Telescope observation requires a proper telescope-rated solar filter securely fitted over the front of the optics and safe procedures. Eclipse glasses alone are not safe with a telescope.

For integration support, contact anurag@dapperfinch.com. Send only the operation, approximate request time and request ID if available. Do not send credentials, raw observing coordinates, addresses or complete chat histories.
